m0n0wall, two cents firewall

This is exactly! A very good no cost firewall. M0n0wall is a firewall with commercial features, using a FreeBSB bare-bones OS as a little solid rock to support firewall activities. The configuration system is only PHP and web based and all configuration is storage in XML format, being very easy perform backups and migrations. The main advantage, in addiction to the price -no price-, is the system chosen to run this software, it could be a basic ancient PC system x86 without hard disk (the system load via CDROM and keep the configuration files written in a diskette), 64MB RAM, CDROM unit (to boot firewall system), in other words, the PC leaved and forgotten in the basement already have a new use. Mainly I discover this firewall searching for a good "Captive Portal" system free & quick to install. In my opinion, this firewall is perfect to captive or web portals to grant Internet access in small and mid-size business such as hotels, public oriented areas. Also is very recommended use it as hotspot in WiFi networks, using or not captive portal facilities (it depends on its use is open -public- or protected with user-password -private-)

To start is very easy: you need to download an ISO image from the download area at m0n0wall site and burn it with your favorite burning images software. To run the firewall you must boot from CD and perform the first configuration using a diskette to storage the configuration.

A first approaching to meet this nice firewall could be this link from cisco press:
